Oostende is a city in West-Flanders, home to some 70,000 citizens and is located right in the centre of the Belgian coast. In summertime, its number of residents mushrooms to 400,000.
During the 9th century Oostende was a small settlement inhabited by fishermen and shepherds. In 1267, Margareth of Constantinople granted Oostende city and market rights. In 1445, Philip the Good gave his permission to build a port. Oostende went through a Spanish, Austrian, French and Dutch period. After Belgium’s independence and spurred on by King Leopold I, the city further developed into an important centre with a railway line, postal services, a fish market and a link with Dover. Oostende became Queen of the Seaside Resorts, currently City at the Seaside.
From a social point of view, Oostende is on its second wind. It boasts numerous successful tourist attractions. One of the most prominent museums is the Provinciaal Museum voor Moderne Kunst (PMMK) [Provincial Museum for Modern Art]. It houses some world-renowned residents of which Lucy Loes, Arno Hintjens, Kamagurka, James Ensor, Leon Spilliaert and Henri Storck are the most distinguished.
In Ostend, we have approximately 4897 parking spaces in the payement zone.
