Willebroek originated in the 11th or 12th century as land was reclaimed from the marshes, from which it also derives its name: “broek” (= marshy area).

Willebroek is located in the polders of the sand-loam region, in a region formed by river and brook valleys. This river system is linked to the Scheldt, one of the tributaries being the Rupel along which Willebroek’s famous drawbridge is located.

Willebroek is situated on the intersection of the Antwerp–Brussels (North-South) axis – A12 and E19 with regional road N16 Sint-Niklaas – Mechelen.

The centre of Willebroek has a pay parking area with a capacity of 280 spaces.
